Autumn Colours and Thanksgiving

Autumn has snuck up on us. The leaves are rapidly changing, and the colours are going to be spectacular this year. Some of us live in areas where the fall colours are truly exceptional. The rest of us get to imagine, see photos, or – if we are really fortunate – visit a cottage where the fall colours are fantastic. It is great that Thanksgiving happens during the peak of fall colours. It is much easier to find the things we are thankful for when there is beauty all around. Happy Thanksgiving and have a wonderful weekend.

For some people this is the most wonderful time of the year – kids are going back to school. For others it’s the worst time as we pack our “older” kids up and they move on to bigger and better things. No matter what side you are on it can be a wild emotional rollercoaster. Some of us want the warm summer nights to continue, some are longing for the cooler fall days and crisp nights. One thing we know is that this time period for us is an adjustment so let it happen, embrace the last few weeks, try and squish those lasting memories in with family, but most importantly, make the best of it. Dryer vents are one of those household items that are out of sight and easy to forget about. All dryers have lint traps that capture the majority of the lint from drying clothes, bedding, and towels. The National Fire Protection Association’s NFPA 96 (NFPA Kitchen Hood Cleaning Requirements) requires trained and certified personnel to clean restaurant kitchen hoods and exhausts on a regular basis (NFPA 96-11.4). This is a fire prevention measure. The fire concern is the level of grease that can accumulate in the shaft behind the filters. The danger is invisible until you remove the filters to see the duct work behind. According to the NFPA, systems serving moderate volume cooking operations should be cleaned twice per year.

Spring Cleaning Checklist

Spring has sprung! Spring cleaning is on the mind for many. Here is a checklist to help.

KITCHEN

– Clean stainless steel sinks. Pour baking soda and vinegar down the drain to eliminate any smells.

– Clean windows inside and outside. Newspaper works great on windows and mirrors.

– Clean the fronts and inside cupboards. Ideally removing all contents and cleaning the insides.

-Clean large appliances such as fridges, ovens and microwaves.

-Empty and toss all unnecessary items in your junk drawer.

GARAGE

-Organize and purge items in the garage. Declutter your home and garage of all unneeded Winter items such as shovels and snow removal equipment.

LIVING AREAS

– Clean window coverings. Clean all blinds and take curtains to dry cleaners.

-Clean all light fixtures and ceiling fans.

-Organize closets. Sort, and donate any clothing unwanted clothing or shoes.

-Move spring clothing so they are accessible, switch out any Winter clothing.

BATHROOMS

– Deep clean bathrooms. Don’t forget to remove build up on shower heads by soaking vinegar over the shower head.

– Organize bathroom vanity. Remove everything from drawers to clean. Toss any unnecessary items.

BASEMENT

-Don’t forget to change the air filter in your furnace.
